Working With Folktales

Presented by Mary Hamilton

Through these workshop sessions, participants will examine ways to incorporate folktales into their repertoire.

Sessions will include:

· exploring methods for learning folktales and helping others learn them.

· playing with decisions tellers make when retelling tales.

· incorporating audience participation Bring a folktale you'd like to adapt to include audience participation.

· developing new tales from folktale patterns.

· looking at the roles of research and of your audience in the evolution of folktale retellings.

· considering the question: Just what are we telling when we tell a folktale from outside our own culture?

Whether you are a beginner or experienced teller, these activities will enhance your knowledge and skills.

Who is Mary Hamilton?

Since 1983 Mary has earned her living telling stories and teaching others about the art of storytelling. Her performances and workshops have been presented from Florida to Alaska. Her CD Sisters All . . . and One Troll won an iParenting Media Award, a Parent’s Choice Gold Award, and a Storytelling World Award for Storytelling Recordings. Her latest CD Alligators, Bees, and Surprise, Oh My! was selected for a Storytelling World Honor Award for Storytelling Recordings. In 2009 the National Storytelling Network honored Mary with a Circle of Excellence Oracle Award presented to artists who are recognized by their peers to be master storytellers who set the standards for excellence and have demonstrated, over a significant period of time, a commitment and dedication to the art of storytelling. Over her many years of storytelling, one question Mary doubts she will ever stop exploring is, “Just how does storytelling work?” Come, join that exploration in the 7th Storytellers Wild Week.
